Our Case Study: Architectural Visualizations for 1st Prize Architecture Competition: Middenblok Nieuwegein, Netherlands

Assignment for Architectural Competition Renders

We were invited to collaborate on the organised architecture contest submission, called Middenblok Nieuwegein – Lotus The Green Collective, to provide 3D architectural visualization services. The ideas of designers and young architects became the 1st place featured winning design contest.

As it is with architectural competitions everywhere,  the work is very intense, on tight deadlines and accompanied with quite a few challenges to face during the architectural process.

Let’s see how we created the architectural renderings. Did we reflect on the innovative thinking concept and narrative of this residential property project?

What was Our Role?

Artistic representation of a competition design through architectural visualization plays an important role to attract the jury or client on first sight, making them want to look further into the world of design details.

It may not be the only requirement to submit and win contests, but with good storytelling architectural renders surely one can take the competition design and its meaning to a whole new level. The contest submission itself becomes a statement.

While working on a tender, competition, or any type of pitch, we believe that the idea and concept of the participants should clearly come through to the jury. We have to pay attention to the little details and the storytelling features, like the type of people, activities they are undertaking, textures of architectural, and landscape design.

On top of that, the angles and type of lighting plays a key role in showing the essence of great design of future buildings and architectural spaces. Without all these elements, telling a convincing story through architectural portraits is not possible.

In all of that, the most essential skill is how all visual elements expressed on 3D images come together in uniformity to create the bigger picture.

Visualize Innovative Thinking for Small Scale Architecture and Urban Planning

In order to secure the winning design of this launched architectural contest, understanding of the participants vision and design structure were at the core. The focus was to visualize and represent the coexistence of a built environment with the landscape forming a symbiosis relationship on high-quality architectural visualizations delivered on an agreed upon deadline.

This architecture competition is combining urban planning world with small scale architecture form for residential and common use. Buildings were planned by young architects to highlight not only the ecological connection to earth but also to show collaboration between housing and coworking spaces through the buildings’ structure and functional divisions.

How This and the Next Generation View Residential Property

The architectural visualization above showcases the great design in its totality. It comes from a set angle from small scale architecture, namely the residences’ balcony and extrapolates it within the context. It explores the concept of architectural coexistence and creates sustainable living structure with its use of different material textures and how future users enjoy doing common activities together.

The view also depicts how the residents are going to experience their time there. It allows for picturing new ideas on how the current and the next generation view residential property in terms of spending their free time. The future use is defined by urban gardening and common collective green space, which is designed in the center of the garden. It creates the opportunity and hope launched by designers new ideas of the functions and designing a space not only for people but with the ecological approach.

With design challenge and innovative thinking, small scale architecture could change how this and the next generation view residential buildings and architecture world.

Sustainability and Landscape Submit in Design and on 3D Images

Working with landscape and plantation can be a challenge. However, it is worth spending time and effort on, especially when the design submit the aspect of nature and its core relation with mankind, emphasizing the beauty of architectural spaces.

The architectural portrait above shows an example of a composition of different species of green plants like trees, shrubs and perennials with the built environment. The children playing on the grass give the feeling of a happy and secure neighborhood, underlining the residential aspect of contest submission. The façades covered with greenery speaks to the sustainability of urban planning in the area and the coexistence of natural and anthropological world.

Visual Storytelling through Renderings

Storytelling is the essence of a good architectural render submission. A 3D portrait should narrate the idea behind the design concept and express the stories that are going to live in that design. They transport a vision from an imagination to the emotional states of a jury.

For example, adding people and activities around the architectural space tell about the future structure, functions and main target groups. They evoke emotion from the jury and address what the space feels like.

Creating more Visual Meaning

On higher level, people of different age groups have been added to the architectural renderings to depict the inclusivity of society and community itself to show that architecture is made for people. The focus of this architecture rendering is on the concept of sustainability and urban gardening by composing different species of plants together.

On top of that, the discipline of taking care about the basics, like the angle of camera, colors and use of various textures supposed made this portrait attractive to the eye.

Not only Temporary Exhibitions of Art Pieces

The art element above was featured as an integral subject in the design. Like you probably noticed, it is the axis of the whole project, because of its name “Lotus The Green Collective”. It is referring on one hand to the collective design ideas like coworking spaces, but also to create collaboration with alternative streetart tradition of the area.

The design guidelines were listing artistic alternative attraction to integrate into the 3D architectural illustrations. The architects and landscape architects had the concept to enrich the immediate living environment by using the streetart piece made by the collective “De Strakke Hand”. You can see it with the Lotus flower on the communal area in 3D architectural render below.

It was chosen an angle which could present a greater image with a two-point perspective angle. The Lotus has been given a central position. What is the most important it is seen from outside, it is like a visit card of this architectural design.

Low Carbon Emission Statement

Bicycles have been placed in such a way that they immediately catch the attention and express the integrated idea of the pedestrian and bicycle user-friendly environment of the designed neighborhood. We placed them on the first plan in order to convey this topic accordingly.
